TechnologyOne has built a new set of cybersecurity safeguards to protect its local government customers from AI-powered scam schemes that cost two Queensland councils millions of dollars.
Recently, fraudsters deceived council staff into changing the details for legitimate suppliers before issuing false invoices, defrauding millions before the deception was uncovered.
To address the escalating threat to Councils, TechnologyOne has built powerful new AI-powered anomaly detection safeguards.
These new features can identify and intervene when details on an invoice look suspicious, based on what the system has learnt from past experience.
This will be flagged to financial teams to prevent invoice payment fraud, potentially saving clients and communities millions. Sitting at the heart of the finance process, the solution intelligently adds friction only when key details change—keeping teams fast, efficient, and protected.
The capability, included in a new capability called InvoiceIQ, is included in TechnologyOne’s latest major software release, available to all customers.
Chandan Potukuchi, Chief Technology Officer, TechnologyOne, said, “Our solution adds automated intelligence-driven protections to the financial processes that accounts payable teams rely on, helping keep them efficient and more resilient against cyber threats.”
He added, “Cyber criminals now have more powerful tools, thanks to the misuse of AI, but these examples still prey on human frailty and gaps in email security - taking advantage of time-poor people doing critical jobs. So we’ve acted to turn the tables by building additional optional security and safeguards functionality.”
“Cybercriminals are evolving fast, and so are we,” said Chandan.
Chandan added, “Protecting our customers and ratepayers’ money is our highest priority. With the rise in cyber fraud attempts, TechnologyOne’s latest advancement gives Councils confidence that their funds and community are protected. It’s a proactive step to safeguard financial integrity in today’s challenging climate.”
Key benefits include:
- Reduce risk of Accounts Payable fraud with intelligent safeguards and real-time anomaly detection.
- Strengthen protection against BEC scams and invoice manipulation with automated validation and secure workflows.
- Boost efficiency and compliance via streamlined workflows and automated checks.
Hackers are increasingly using AI-enhanced attacks to trick accounts payable teams and redirect large payments. With annual losses reaching millions per council, the need for robust fraud-detection systems has never been greater.
Chandan Potukuchi said “This is more than a software upgrade - it’s a security evolution for finance teams. We’re committed to continuous innovation so councils and organisations can do more, securely and confidently.
This is about protecting ratepayers’ money and strengthening trust. Homegrown technology to keep councils safe, communities secure, and Australian data at home.”
